Easy Approach to Plantar Fasciitis Treatment

Plantar fasciitis or inflammation of the plantar fascia occurs when the plantar fascia suffers very small tears at its insertion into the heel bone, or anywhere along its length.  With incorrect foot mechanics, excessive use or the presence of other triggers, the force applied to the plantar fascia during walking and running and the transfer of body weight from one foot to the other can tear the fascia from where it joins to the heel and result in microscopic tears.

Plantar fasciitis is a serious condition.  At its most extreme, the most serious of plantar fasciitis can lead to ruptures in the ligament.

The first step is to cease the activity that caused the foot inflammation.  The person should modify his or her activity or exercise routines to reduce stress on the plantar fascia.  You should rest your feet, elevate the feet and use ice repeatedly during the beginning part of treatment.  Patients should try not to run or walk too much, instead go for a bike ride or a swim.  Activity levels must be raised gradually avoiding pain with each increased level.  Basic anti-inflammatory medications such as asprin or ibuprofen may reduce pain, but patients must make sure they get medical advice prior to using any medication.

After the initial rest and recovery stage, patients should start a slightly more aggressive phase of treatment, tackling the condition with many techniques.  These should include: taping, PT and deep massage, wearing night braces, inserts for shoes or specialized plantar fasciitis shoes.  A structured stretching program should be followed (preferably following a short warm-up), although make sure you avoid too aggressive stretching at the start of the treatment as this can re-injure the plantar fascia.

It can take many months for symptoms to disappear and the plantar fascia to be fully healed.  Remember that a torn ligament (even only very tiny tears) only comes about following persistent and extended stress and to fix this, long-term treatment and rest will be required.  Further, the longer the patient has had plantar fasciitis and the worse the pain, the longer the treatment will take.

Very severe plantar fasciitis should be evaluated by a doctor who will consider if more aggressive treatments are required.  If conservative treatments have not cured the condition, your doctor may prescribe non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), steroid injections, or deep x-ray therapy.  Surgery is only necessary in the most extreme of cases.
