Summer Sandals Can Be a Pain

Summer has finally arrived. Along with summer comes shorts and tank tops, bathing suits and BBQs, sun and, of course, sandals. Easy to slip on and off and cool enough for the hot summer days, sandals tend to be the main choice for footwear during the summer months. Sandal styles vary, but flip-flops have been gaining in popularity in recent years. Unfortunately, along with flip-flops come foot injuries. The flip-flop style sandal has almost no arch support and little beyond the two flimsy straps on top to keep the foot on the sole of the sandal. The result is overworked tendons and an overstressed arch. Ankle sprains are common injuries for flip-flop wearers, but more chronic problems, like tendonitis and plantar fasciitis can also develop. Flip-flops are not the only culprit, many sandals do not offer much arch support, shock absorption and have little material to keep the foot on the sole. The combination of flip-flops and high heels tends to be the deadliest summer sandal choice. A nice summer evening out can easily turn into a night in the emergency room with a sprained or broken ankle.

There are many shoes and sandals available today which are comfortable, but will not compromise your sense of style. When looking for a summer sandal, following these simple tips:

<b>1.    The sole of the sandal should be larger than your foot. </b>Your foot should not hang over the sides or the back of the sandal.

<b>2.    There should be enough material on the top of the sandal to keep your foot</b> on the sole and to keep the foot from slipping.

<b>3.    The sole of the sandal should be rigid and not flex in the middle. </b>If you can take your sandal and fold it in half, then it is too flexible and it will not offer enough support.

<b>4.    Keep in mind that many sandals are not made for walking,</b> but designed purely for style. Owning one pair of sandals for walking and one pair for sitting at the beach or at a BBQ may be a good idea.

<b>5.    When buying a sandal for walking, look for a sturdy sole,</b> multiple straps with buckles or velcro, built in arch supports or an accommodation for a custom orthotic.

If you just can’t imagine the idea of parting with your flip-flops or stylish sandals this summer, then consider carrying a pair of athletic shoes or walking sandals in your car for those times when you may be doing more walking. Areas with hills, stairs or slippery surfaces are not appropriate for walking in flip-flops and could lead to injury. If you develop arch pain or heel pain while in your sandals, stop wearing them and visit a podiatrist.

Suffer From Foot Pain?

If we don’t take care of our feet, we won’t be going very far, but even in light of this basic fact, many people don’t give their feet the attention they deserve!

Of all the parts that make up your body, your feet probably suffer the most stress on a day to day basis. From uncomfortable shoes to just walking on concrete floors day in and day out, feet can develop pain that ranges from mild to excruciating. With a little bit of thought and effort however, some well-considered foot care can go a long way towards keeping your feet healthy and happy.

When thinking about foot care, one of the most important things to think about are your shoes. No matter what shoes you like to wear, they should above all be comfortable. Some people that shoes should be broken in, but nothing could be further from the truth. If shoes don’t fit right on your feet while you are trying them on, don’t buy them. Shoes that fit poorly can lead to you get cuts and sores on your feet that will take ages to heal.

When you do get sores or cuts on your feet, it is important to heal them as quickly and completely as possible. Remember that open air is good for your feet and when you are spending some time watching television, take off your shoes and socks. Whenever you see a sore developing, make sure to apply medication as needed.

To speed up the healing process, make sure that you wear socks that are extremely clean and soft; socks with a rough texture can abrade and irritate sores. Whenever possible, remove dead skin from the heels and soles of your feet to prevent infection and irritation. A pedicure, whether you’re male or female, can go a long way towards keeping your feet healthy.

One of the biggest problems that affect the foot is that of sweat. When your feet sweat, there is a good chance that you will not be in a situation where you can remove your shoes to air them out. Athlete’s foot is one problem that can occur when your feet sweat excessively, and any sores or calluses that are already on your feet will be irritated and worsen in the presence of sweat.

To prevent this situation from getting out of hand, wear shoes that breathe; canvas or leather shoes are good for this, as are sandals. Don’t wear the same shoes day in and day out and if necessary, use foot powder to dry your feet out a little.

In terms of general foot care to reduce foot pain, there are just a few things to remember. Remember to wash your feet when you bathe and when you do so, rinse the soap off thoroughly to prevent itchiness from dried soap. Also, when trimming your toenails, remember not to trim them straight across. Exposing your nail bed to constant pressure and irritation can cause sores to develop. Keep in mind that many over the count products to dissolve corns and bunions can be harmful and corrosive to healthy skin as well as skin that has been affected.

When it comes right down to it, remember that if you take care of your feet, they will take care of you.

Relief from Plantar Fasciitis Pain

Caused by tears and inflammation in the plantar fascia, a band of shock absorbent ligament connecting the toes to the heel, plantar fasciitis causes heel pain that can range from mild to debilitating. A characteristic symptom of this condition is noticeable heel pain when taking the first steps in the morning or upon standing after sitting for an extended period. Pain is also typically worse after prolonged periods of standing or when shoes with inadequate support are worn.

Usually the discomfort caused by plantar fasciitis can be alleviated without resorting to surgery or cortisone shots. While different treatments for plantar fasciitis work best for different people, some common recommendations for controlling plantar fasciitis pain are:

Top 7 Tips to Treat and Prevent Calf Pain

You are playing tennis. You hit a backhand and set yourself for the volley. It is a lob. You take off,, lunging to reach the shot and all of a sudden you hear a snap, and you can’t move forward. You feel as though you have lost control of your left calf. That is the scenario of a ruptured tendon. But calf pain is not always so drastic. Often, it is a dull ache that grates your lower leg. Sore calves can be triggered by foot problems, such as high arches or flat feet, or by ill-fitting shoes. Or the pain may be the result of a muscle tear, a partial rupture of the Achilles tendon, or the tendon inflammation called tendonitis. Problems like that will need to be treated by a doctor, of course. But if you have injured your calf or, more commonly, simply suffer from aching legs, here are some tips that you can consider to adopt.

1. Try Lifts

If your calf pain is caused by an injury, take pressure of your heel. Heel lifts available at athletic shoe stores can help ease the strain on tendons and muscles. To make heel lifts, cut two ¼ -inch-thick pieces of cork and place them in your shoes.

2. RICE

RICE means rest, ice, compression, and elevation. Rest an injured calf for the first day or two, ice the area for no more than 20 minutes at a time every 2 to 3 hours as needed, compress the leg with an elastic bandage, and elevate the leg above the level of your heart, if possible. You can apply moist heat such as hot water bottle to the injury after the first 72 hours. Moist heat is more effective than dry heat.

3. Try Arch Supports

When you wear arch supports inside your shoes, they help correct mechanical imbalances that affect the way you walk. These imbalances may throw off your gait and put extra pressure on your calves.

4. Rub And Wrap

Once the swelling recedes, rub your injured calf with a pain-relieving balm and wrap it in a plastic wrap. Then top that wrap with an elastic bandage. This will help to retain the heat and relax the calf muscles so that it doesn’t cramp up. You can wear the combination wrap as long as it is comfortable.

5. Check Your Shoes’ Shocks

It is recommended to replace worn shoes. Losing the shock absorption in your shoes can lead to calf pain. Once you lose 1/8 inch of thread, get new shoes or have the soles replaced.

6. Try NSAID

To reduce the pain and inflammation of an injured calf, try an over-the-counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) such as ibuprofen. If you still need pain medication after a week, see a doctor.

7. Pamper Your Calves

If your calf pain is not the result of an injury, revamping your footwear may relieve the soreness. It is recommended to wear running shoes as often as possible. If you have to wear dress shoes at work, change into them when you get to the office.
